Founded in 1997, the San Francisco Guitar Quartet has established itself as a dynamic force in the guitar world through its innovative concerts and recordings. Drawing from a variety of musical traditions, they are committed to presenting new music and regularly collaborate with composers to expand the guitar quartet repertoire.
The SFGQ’s recordings have garnered praise from critics and fans alike. London's Classical Guitar Magazine said of Compadres "Here is a nice release from a very capable, both technically and musically, group of players who give strong performances throughout in this particularly interesting programme" and Acoustic Guitar Magazine chose the album as a "Top CD of 2003." Composer Phillip Houghton remarked about the group’s recording of his work,“Congratulations on a superb CD! Opals is wonderfully played! It is Beautiful!”
The SFGQ has given sold out performances on the Island of Guam and toured the United States with performances in New York, New Jersey, Florida, Texas, Arizona, New Hampshire, Illinois, Missouri, California, and Oregon. Other past performances include San Francisco’s Omni Series, La Guitarra California Festival, Pasadena’s Guitarra del Mar series, the Hot Air Music Festival, and Dresdner Gitarrenfest in Dresden, Germany. The group has also performed at Universities throughout the United States and has appeared on both NPR and the syndicated radio shows West Coast Live and Classical Guitar Alive!
"Without a doubt the SFGQ's performance was an outstanding highlight of our festival. Your impeccable technique, warm sound, and stage presence spilled over to the audience and set the tone for the rest of the festival."
--Reed Gilchrist, Director, Guitarra California Festival
